In the news is the Sidekick fiasco where a service has lost customer's data. And this is just part of what is wrong with the whole concept of cloud computing.

Cloud Computing is the latest innovation. But what is it? Use a browser as a word processor, for example, where your data is stored somewhere on the Internet and you're doing cloud computing. Before the advent of the personal computer all computing was a small version of a cloud. That is, there were servers and workstations tied to the servers and all the data was stored on the server. This was fine if your company had good backup procedures.

But now the data is store somewhere on the internet. You have no control over how it is done and that's the problem.
This means that if the company you're depending on to secure your data is lax, your data is not secure. Worse, let's assuming you expect that the data will also be secure from prying eyes. Is it? Well maybe.

The company may say that it stores data using the latest razmataz encryption method but how do you know? Who do you trust? T-Mobile told people their Sidekick data was secure. They lied. And if they lie what about Google and Microsoft (both of whom are pushing the concept of the cloud).

So thank you but no thanks! I'll do all my work locally and if I should need to have data available via the internet I will encrypt it myself before I place it there and only use it as an additional backup.

What's your thoughts?

Again I ask, "Why Clarion?"

I wrote my first program in 1966. It was a very simple
program designed to teach me to program. I wrote it in Autocoder for the IBM
1401. By 1974 I had written programs in assembler, and COBOL, in addition. From
'74 to '95 I spent a fair amount of time teaching people to program and manage
projects and also writing programs.

When I started programming in COBOL in 1970 or '71 I fell in
love. I know it's not popular to say you liked programming in COBOL but I did.
I liked it because it worked the way I thought about programming. That is,
First you defined your data and then you used it to write your program. Also,
it allowed the programmer to spend most of his time dealing with the
user/client's needs rather than with the computer's needs.

Some liked assembler. They liked being close to the guts of
the computer. Others liked languages like C (yes there was an A and a B). I
never did. I actually was never interested in the lines of code. Rather I was
always interested in solving user problems and COBOL allowed by to do that.

In '77 I got a TRS-80 and, like everyone, wrote programs in
Basic but I kept looking for a personal computer language that would allow me
to spend my time solving problems rather than coding. In '84, I believe, I came
across a language called Selector which kind of did that but it was not very
popular and for a while I gave up on ever finding a language I liked. Then in
1988 I came across Clarion. This was Clarion for DOS (no Windows and certainly
no mouse). I loved it. Everything I loved about COBOL was there and more. I
could spend my time solving user needs rather than writing code.

By '92 I had written a bunch of programs and then had an
opportunity to go virtually full-time into writing in Clarion. Around '95 I
started writing in an early version of Clarion for Windows and I've never
looked back... Except for this article. As I've said Clarion works for me. When
I'm working in it I rarely am spending time thinking about the computer's need.
I spend all my time focused on the needs and wants of the user, the client.

I'll give you an example. A client recently said to me he
wanted a modification to his software. He wanted to start storing his
customer's credit card information for automatic billing. Typically he wanted
the salesmen to get the credit card information but once they had entered the
info, he only wanted the administrative and billing staff to have access to
that info. So how do I let the salesmen enter the information and yet prevent
them from seeing after that? Simple. And a couple hours later it was finished,
tested, and implemented.

That's why Clarion works for me. But that's only one example
so here's another. Back in '98, I
believe, a client wanted me to create a website where my client's customers
could go to pick up their current reports. This client produced hundreds of
reports per day for their customers and they wanted to use the web as the
distribution medium.

We not only completed that project but have been modifying
over the years as the client adds new features to their reports. What started
out being used by a handful of their customers is now used by about 2500
different users all over the country. It works 24/7 year-after-year and all
written in Clarion.

Do you have a favorite language? Tell me about it and tell
me why you love it.

I write custom software and by custom software I mean that I work with companies to create software tailored to the way they do business instead of the reverse. The reverse? Yeah, adjusting the way you do business because the software you use requires you to do things a certain way. And when I write in the Clarion language.

Ok but why Clarion?

In the past I've done work for various Fortune 500 companies. Hell, I've done work, at one time, for the Fortune 1. But these days I focus on small businesses and if you're a small business owner you know you can't afford to pay what the big guys lay out for software.
So Clarion is my language of choice because it is easy to create quick, good-looking applications that meet a client's needs. Clarion is what is known as a RAD language; RAD meaning Rapid Application Development and isn't that what you want? I think so.

Clarion makes my job easy or at least easier (sometimes it's just not going to be easy<g>).

So I use Clarion but how does that help you?

The usual process for creating software is: figure out what you want; determine how to do it; figure out how long it will take; and then do it. Of course there is one other critical factor-- how much will it cost? There is a direct relationship between how much it costs and how long it takes. If it costs more it probably is because it took longer to do. So, since you, the small businessman or woman, care about cost you should also care about how quickly I can produce a solution.

Then there is another aspect which also explains why I use Clarion. Over time you will want changes and a program written in Clarion is easy to modify. So that's why I use Clarion.

Can I do something for you?
For years I've believed in AVG from Grisoft. Great anti-virus software except for when it isn't. I'll explain. Recently AVG software has been really persistent about wanting to install the Yahoo toolbar which I don't want, don't use, don't like. So I say no. Yet at some point I always end up with it. Arggh!

Then there is the issue of my remote control software. I support people using a product called Remote Helpdesk-- a great product. But it appears to get blocked periodically by AVG. And then there is RADMIN which we use to remote into our client's machines and which they use to work on their office machines from home. Another piece of great software which AVG vigorously blocks regardless of what you tell it to do.

So it was time to look for something else.
What I settled on was Vipre from Sunbelt Software. Vipre is quite vigilant and has found some suspect software on my machine that AVG appears to have missed. That's to the good. It also plays nice. Once you tell it to leave alone a program it will no longer try to quarantine it. Which is also to the good. So far the only negative is the annoying message that reports each morning how the scan went even when there is nothing to report. I wish I could make that go away.

I asked a colleague what software he used and he said NOD32. I have no recent experience with it. I wonder what others find good?

Let me preface by saying virtually all of my experiences with Apple (the corporation... not the fruit) have been less than satisfying. So there are those who know me who would be surprised that not only did I buy an iPhone but that I think it's terrific.

The iPhone makes it easy. That in a nutshell is what I like. So, I have an iPhone. I can make calls and that's nice but that's to be expected. I've seen the ads for all of the apps and that was interesting but what did I care... I'd never use those.

Two days after getting the iPhone I was in a discount wine store and there were two wines I was considering that I knew absolutely nothing about. Suddenly I thought of the iPhone apps. WIthin a few short minutes I had downloaded and installed an app to help me evaluate which wine to get.

That same week my doctor said I should walk more and I said I had been walking through a woods several times each week. He asked how far I walked and I realized I had no idea. The next time as I started out I pulled out the iPhone and found a pedometer app. Now I not only know how far I walk but I can log it.

The people who designed the iPhone really seem to understand about helping people perform better. Great product.

CCleaner - ccleaner.com -
This free program (they do appreciate donations) makes quick work of
cleaning out the crap that infests our computers: temporary files,
cookies, etc. But it also has some other important functions including
a registry cleaner & repair tool, and, my favorite tool - an
uninstaller that works better (in my opinion) than the one that comes
with windows.

Recuva - piriform.com/recuva
- This is another free program from piriform (the makers of CCleaner). It
will attempt to recover deleted files. If the area on your hard drive
where the original files has been over-written there's no hope but if
not, Recuva will get it back.

Diskeeper - diskeeper.com - This defragmenter works in background (you'll forget it's there) keeping your drive unfragmented. With this product there's no need to periodically defragment your drive because it never gets fragmented.

Stardock software - stardock.com - These guys make a wealth of products which you can purchase individually or bundled on an annual subscription basis which is what I do. Besides allowing you to dramatically change the look of your desktop, they also create a wealth of additional tools. My favorites include: ObjectBar, Fences, DesktopX, TweakVista, Virtual Desktops, and WindowBlinds.

In addition to these I use Thunderbird for email, RecentX to manage my documents, NewsRover to read newsgroups, Acronis for backup, Rollback which is similar to Goback from Symantec, and Evernote for capturing information I want to store.

So that's enough for now. What do you use?

We write custom software that our customers use to help their businesses perform better. You may or may not have ever thought of custom software for your business but perhaps you should.

We find that when times are tough our business gets better. In fact, when I recently saw a list of periods of recession over the last 35ish years I was stunned to realize that they were, by far, my busiest periods.
Why is that? I think it's because during tough economic times people try to do more with less and in this age where computers make themselves felt in all sorts of ways it's logical that people will try to find more ways to do more and computers will be the key factor.

It seems there are two types of customers for our customized software. Some use the software to do more less expensively. Others find ways to use our software as a tool to bring in new business.

Let me give you a couple of examples.

First let's look at a customer whose business is bogged-down because they can't get all of their work done on time. That customer might think that they are using our software to make their days easier but actually they are saving the business. Let's say you run a landscaping business. A customer calls and asks when you can come. You say it will be a week or two because right then you're very busy. Perhaps the customer calls someone else.

Custom software might help you realize that Thursday is actually a lighter day than you realized and could fit the customer in. If only you had known. Perhaps you spend too much time handling government forms and we could help by automating that process leaving you more time to be on the phone suggesting services to your potential customer base.

But take another customer who uses our services as a sales tool. This customer asked us to do a job which would allow them to offer a new service to their clients. Tthat job ended up costing about $10,000. However, the day job was finished they were able to land a client that gave them $1,000,000 worth of new business because of the job we had done.

So all we are saying is consider spending to make money and improve that bottom line.

If you think we may be able to help give us a call.

If you use Windows you probably understand the desktop to be those icons that sit there that you can click on to do something. BumpTop is a new metaphor for that desktop. Take a look at it.

Further, if you're really interested in desktops that look different check out:

Stardock and Stardock Fences

CubeDesktop

AltDesk

These are just a few. There are others but the idea is the same-- they all try to make your desktop experience better.
Being interested in things that increase performance I've heard so many for years marvel at their various iPods, Blackberrys, Palms, etc.

Recently I got my wife an iPod Nano, Since then we've both spent much
frustrated time trying to figure out how to make it work. So here's a
suggestion to Apple. Don't hide the instructions inside of a piece of
cardboard at the bottom of the box where it can't be seen. Who knew
there were directions.

And who knew that it's logical to swipe a digit across the control from
left to right to cause a menu to scroll up and down. Arggh!

Then there's the text messaging crowd that I don't understand. I have
some small understanding in that I "ICQ" daily to one or more
consultants but why people want to send text messages back and forth
when they could talk to one another I don't understand.

Finally there are Palms and other devices that require a stylus to enter notes. I don't understand. I often carry a bunch of 3x5 cards with a rubber band around them or sometimes a small 3x5 spiral notebook in my shirt pocket. Pen in hand I can take notes far faster and when I don't need them anymore it's real easy to get rid of them.

Can someone explain the love for these devices?
